The Association for the Visually Impaired (AVI) provides services to blind and severely visually impaired people of all ages. Services are provided in their homes, schools and employment environment enabling them to achieve maximum independence, continue to live in their own homes and be active members of the community.
Services provided are: Orientation/Mobility instruction prepares an individual to travel safely; Rehabilitation Teaching enables individuals to learn new skills to function independently. Social Workers provide counseling and access to community resources. Functional Vision Training includes Braille readiness skills, maximizing use of residual vision and use of other senses. Services are provided to children from birth to five years old. Technology Resource Center provides visually impaired individuals instruction and demonstration in utilization of advanced technologies. Education Support Groups provide information about community resources and opportunities to discuss common concerns. Volunteers’ interests and skills are matched to the needs of visually impaired consumers assisting with shopping, reading mail, transportation and companionship. Community Outreach Education Program educates professional, paraprofessionals, and the general public about visual impairment and how to assist visually impaired or blind individuals.
